Chen Fuchao was pondering whether or not he should commit suicide by throwing himself off the Haizhu Bridge in the southern Chinese city Guangzhou. He had accumulated about 2 million yuan ($290,000) in debt.
While he was thinking, Lai Jiansheng, an onlooker went up to him, shook his hand, and pushed him off the bridge!
Fuchao ended up landing on an inflatable emergency air cushion that authorities laid out earlier. He sustained injuries to his spine and elbow, but otherwise he's ok. The 66-year-old Jiansheng said
I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest. They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities’ attention to their appeals.If you ever contemplate this, make sure there are no angry onlookers or they might make the decision for you.
